Flickr is an official product of Yahoo which deals with Video and Image hosting services. It allows users to share and design unique personal photos, and researchers and use them to host images. The original owner was Ludicorp and in 2004 he built the app.
Then later it was bought over by Yahoo for a rough estimate of $25million. As of 2013, it was reported that Flickr has over 85 million registered members and over 3 million new and fresh images were being uploaded daily.
After the announcing of Flickr as a partner with Getty Images in 2009, it allowed specific users to submit their photos to be used for stock photography. later users were then paying for it but a year later some changes were made so that users could label their images for stock use by them.
Flickr gave users the opportunity to have total privacy control. Users can set privacy to control who sees their photos, Just like Facebook. It groups can be private, and if so, other users cannot view photos in the group.
Visibility is only for those who are in the group. It has a guest pass system which allows people who are not users to view certain private photos under a particular category. Users can drop comments on any image which they have access to view by default.
Flickr allows users to have three types of accounts namely; Free Account, Adfree Account and Doublr account.
- Ad-free account: As the name implies allows users to use it without advertisements popping up for an annual fee.
- Free account: users have up to one terabyte of storage but are liable to see advertisements very often.
- The Doublr account: users have access to twice the amount of storage of free storage.
NB: Flickr may delete a user account without his or her consent/knowledge. It added a new option of reversing the deleted account if the user wants back his or her account.
Flickr photos allow users to organize the photos they are uploading, on a default photos upload to go into their photo stream. Users can view photos as a slideshow, a detail stamp date or view. This wonderful service provides web apps like Organizer and Geo-tagging.
Organizer allows users to organize their photos in their interface using tags modified by themselves. They can place a photo on the world map etc. while Geo-tagging will help users tag their photos to a particular geological area. It is among the earliest implementer of tagging.
In 2007, this service brought a new content that allows users to choose what type of photos they generally upload. This is to know just how safe enough it is for public viewing. It allowed users to specify information about images. Also allowing users to choose from safe, moderate and restricted categories. It also allows users to search for photos using the same criteria.
